Sometimes we find ourselves struggling, often privately and in silence, to cope with something until we begin to talk with each other and soon realize that there are other people facing similar concerns. Group counseling may seem intimidating but it is a great way to meet other people who you can relate to and it offers a supportive way to learn and grow with one another.
What is Group Counselling?
Group counselling involves meeting with a group of individuals who all face similar concerns. Group sessions involve sharing your experiences and listening to others experiences. Group counselling provides a supportive environment to discuss problems and concerns and to work toward your goals.
Groups of 5 to 10 people meet on a weekly basis with a counsellor who facilitates the session. Each group session varies in length from 50-80 minutes depending on the group and groups can expect to meet 8-10 times in a quarter.. You also have the opportunity to continue with the same group into the next quarter.

Benefits of Group Counselling
You are not alone. Groups provide support and make you realize that other students experience similar challenges. You are not as different or alone as you think.
Groups provide a sounding board. Groups can offer a different perspective. Receive support and share your wisdom.
Groups can propel you forward. Hearing from others on how they've overcome can be encouraging. During the group experience you will likely meet people representing a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. Listening and learning from every member's perspective provides members with greater insight into your personal growth and development.
Groups promote social skills. While it is common for people to feel anxious prior to attending their first group, most people feel relieved and more comfortable as the sessions progress. Remember, it takes time to feel comfortable speaking up in a group, adjust to group norms, and experience the benefits of group. It is important that you share at your own pace.
Groups teach you about yourself. Groups can be a way of uncovering the areas that may be blocking your ability to overcome your issues.
Groups offer a confidential, safe space in which to gain self awareness and awareness of others. The experience often reduces loneliness, normalizes your experiences, promotes change in quick and meaningful ways, and helps you to learn and process new skills.
